Thread: Sustainability??

  1. #1

    Default Sustainability??

The world's full of fruit loops.

    http://www.afrigadget.com/2008/02/06...-bike-project/

I have no problems with people using old bicycle parts, nor with building their frames out of bamboo, but to kid themselves that this is a sustainable way of doing stuff??

Surely if the frames had been built properly in the first place, that would have been more sustainable? Millions of bikes get thrown away in the first world every year.... why do these poor buggers need to build "sustainable" ones?

Fruit loops? Wankers is more like it! I wonder how much money the "project team" has sucked up? They'd be better off setting up collection points for unwanted/dumped/broken bicycles and shipping them off to Africa for them to get recycled there, but I guess that appears more patronising than their self indulgent tinkering.

I think the point is that bamboo is a sustainable resource whilst titanium alloy, carbon fiber, aluminium or what ever other metal the frame is constructed from now is not.

Surely if millions of bikes are thrown away every year - wouldn't it be better that they were constructed from a renewable material that could be composted or recycled without adding to the waste stream?

Its easy to ridicule the project but at least they are working on a solution to a big problem.

I agree that it sounds friggin stupid though. Besides bamboo has those fine itchy spikes on it, so you wouldn't want to get a double from someone.

No, it would be better if they were built with a poofteenth more metal, and not thrown away. If every throwaway bike went to these blokes, bent and twisted frames and cracks and all, they'd fix it it the blinking of an eye, and wouldn't have a need for "sustainable" frames.

There's nothing unsustainable about having a bike frame that lasts for a hundred years or more.

It's the message that's screwed. Helping a third world bloke to a bamboo bike is paternalistic nonsense.

Not that I have a strong point of view or anything.

Lucky Zed wasn't the first to open his mouth, we would end up creating a diplomatic incident!

Hmm, I hope my comments don't create a diplomatic incident, of course knowing me it would be an undiplomatic incident.

Looks like terrorists have blown up their site, or they've managed to block only me in case I say something lucid!
